I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
As a Marine Corps veteran, an American citizen, and a patriot, I am deeply concerned about the recent attacks on our flag. Not only have I pledged allegiance to this flag and all it stands for, but I also put on a uniform in defense of it.
But in recent weeks...
* A Colorado mayor banned the Pledge of Allegiance from town meetings,
* An American Olympian turned their back on the flag,
* Singer Macy Gray called the flag "divisive," and
* Black Lives Matter Utah said the flag was "racist."
We live in the greatest country on earth. Have we had our problems? Of course. But have we overcome? Have we made this a better place for our children and grandchildren? Have we consistently strived to become a more perfect Union? Yes, we have.
I will not apologize for the American flag, nor will I turn my back on it. This flag stands as a global beacon for freedom and liberty. To claim anything else is not only false, but purely unpatriotic.
