Friend,
Did you hear about the Supreme Court’s recent outrageous decision to gut the Voting Rights Act?
The Supreme Court’s far-right majority has made it even easier for Republicans to deprive people—particularly Black, brown, and indigenous communities—of their right to vote. And this is in the context of one of the worst waves of attacks on voting rights for communities of color since the civil rights movement.
The constitutional solution is clear: we can and must expand the U.S. Supreme Court.
Thankfully, members of the House and Senate have already introduced legislation to do just that: the Judiciary Act of 2021.
By adding seats to the Supreme Court, this legislation would rebalance the Court and make up for the GOP’s theft of seats in recent years. In the wake of the death of Justice Scalia in 2016, Mitch McConnell and other Republican Senators questioned whether new Supreme Court justices should be nominated and confirmed during a presidential election year and blocked President Obama’s nomination. Just four years later, Mitch McConnell hypocritically pushed a far-right justice through nomination less than a week before President Biden won the election. We’ve got to take the Court back from right-wing justices who will continue to thwart the will of the people.
Add your name to our petition to congressional leaders: Pass the Judiciary Act and expand the Supreme Court NOW. We must protect our right to vote before it’s too late.
The stakes are higher than they’ve ever been before. You may recall 2013’s devastating Shelby County v. Holder case, which eviscerated an essential part of the Voting Rights Act, opening the floodgates for states’ attacks on voting rights, which we’re experiencing today. Well, the Supreme Court’s latest decision about voting rights, Brnovich v. DNC, furthers the Court’s dismantling of the Voting Rights Act.
The Supreme Court’s radical far-right judges further blocked our ability to challenge racist election laws that disparately impact Black, brown, and indigenous communities. All this in a context where voter suppression laws across the country are disproportionately targeting people of color.
Since the inception of this country, powerful white people have blocked Black, brown, and Native Americans’ rights to participate fully in our political process. This has enabled ongoing white supremacy, furthered racial injustices, and set up our government to work primarily for the white wealthy few.
Our progressive movement is urgently trying to build a government that represents and works for ALL of us.
This despicable decision by the far-right majority in the Supreme Court is hostile to the multi-racial democracy we need. And it will play an important role in next year’s midterm elections, as well as further elections. That’s why we’ve got to act fast.
Congress must act now to pass voter protection laws and expand the Supreme Court so we can overturn discriminatory, anti-democratic rulings like this one. Will you sign and share our petition to demonstrate grassroots support for Congress to act?
Please sign the petition now: No more attacks on our voting rights!
In solidarity,
Team Rashida
