The right to access abortion in the United States is under threat like never before.

Just last month, members of Congress introduced this critical legislation which would create a federal safeguard against medically unnecessary restrictions that single out abortion and impede access. Now, we must ensure it's enacted.

Nearly 90% of counties in the U.S. have no abortion provider, and five states are down to their last abortion clinic. If Roe v. Wade were to be overturned, 24 states and 3 territories would likely take action to prohibit abortion entirely. Already, 12 states have so-called "trigger bans" in place that are intended to ban abortion immediately if Roe falls.

And the threat to Roe is real. Next term, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear our case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which challenges a Mississippi law banning abortion after just 15 weeks of pregnancy. The case poses a direct challenge to Roe, and there is no path for the Court to uphold Mississippi's ban without overturning the core holding of that landmark 1973 decision.
