We’re excited to invite you to a private virtual screening of an award-winning new documentary: CURED, which highlights a pivotal but little-known moment in LGBTQ history. In 1973, LGBTQ rights activists challenged the powerful American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses – and the activists won!

The film will be available to watch anytime, at your convenience, from July 23-30. We’re proud to partner with AARP and the producers of CURED to offer this invitation-only preview event to our members and supporters.

We also want you to save the date for a live virtual panel discussion about the film, on Thursday, July 29, from 7-8 p.m. Eastern. The panel will feature the filmmakers, one of the key activists from the film and the SPLC’s very own Scott McCoy, who is the deputy legal director in charge of our LGBTQ Rights work. They’ll have a conversation about the landmark struggle depicted in CURED – and how this victory continues to have a major impact today, including on some of the work we’re doing at the SPLC.

Here’s a little more about CURED, which has been called “fascinating” (Hollywood Reporter) “riveting” (The Queer Review) and “one of the best documentaries of this or any year” (British Film Institute). The film takes viewers inside the David-versus-Goliath battle that led the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its manual of mental illnesses in 1973. CURED spotlights a diverse group of activists who achieved this epic victory in the movement for LGBTQ equality. You can watch the trailer here.

While CURED highlights an often-overlooked story from the past, its lessons are profoundly relevant today. The documentary celebrates the pathbreaking contributions of LGBTQ pioneers – and demonstrates that, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, social change is possible.
