Friend -
It seems that at least one of my CRT emails touched a nerve. My goal is definitely not to anger you or get into an argument with anyone. But I do have an opinion that is worth expressing. So here’s a deeper personal story about why I support CRT and why I call myself an Angry Chinese Guy.
I had a very honorable and inspiring godfather. Even though my dad was very anti-Japanese — he worked to support the allied forces in China during WWII against the Japanese invasion — he chose a Japanese American to be my godfather.
John Miyoshi was a very quiet and kind man who volunteered at his church (where he met my father) and helped new immigrants transition into American culture. John was interned in the Japanese American concentration camps at Tanforan race track in the Bay Area during WWII. And it wasn’t until recently that I found out that in the face of that internment he ended up volunteering to work for the American Intelligence agencies against the Japanese fascist threat and was in reality an American war hero.
Because of the confidential nature of his work we didn’t find out about this until some 50 years after and only after he had passed away. My prism for interpreting CRT is embedded in the hypocrisies of this kind of control and misrepresentation of historical fact. My godfather, and those like him, were treated as traitors only to rise to the occasion and defend this country as ardently as any patriot but unable to tell anyone for 50 years. This is the kind of experience that has made me who I am.
At the end of the day I’m not arguing over what CRT is or is not, or whether it should be taught in our schools. But I am fighting to make sure that the truth of this country is told, especially to our youth. Voter suppression, fake news, hate and fear, these are all strategies that distract from the truth. It has been my unfortunate experience to have lived this contradiction and I have committed my life to fighting for the truth. Please join me, join us in making sure that we can educate everyone on the truth of how this country was built.
