The Supreme Court has partnered with the GOP to permit voter suppression. After issuing two 6-3 decisions late last month to uphold dangerous new restrictions on voting, it’s clear the Court can’t be counted on to protect the right to vote.
Now more than ever, we must pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to preserve every Americans’ fundamental right to vote.
Republicans have made it clear they don’t think they can win an election straight up -- so they’ll suppress as many votes as they can to take back power.
In the House, my Democratic colleagues and I passed the For the People Act because we understand the urgency of protecting our fundamental democratic freedoms.
However, Republican Senators led by Mitch McConnell continue to shamelessly block the For the People Act because they’re afraid of the people exercising their voice.
It’s no secret that Donald Trump stacked the Supreme Court with conservative justices in favor of the GOP and Republican state legislatures across the country are rushing to pass new voter suppression legislation.
Now that we know that Trump’s justices on the Court won’t stop voter suppression, it’s imperative that Congress takes action.
