John,
Right now, we're in the fight of our lives for our homes, our communities, and our families. We’re facing a climate crisis — and we need to pass bold, progressive legislation that meets the scale of our problems now.
That is why I am excited to share with you my latest piece of legislation that I believe will help us to address the climate crisis by transforming our schools and education system: the Green New Deal for Public Schools.
In short, the Green New Deal for Public Schools will invest $1.43 trillion over ten years in America’s K-12 education system to heal and strengthen our schools for the 21st century. The bill places our young people at the center of our national response to the crises of climate change, systemic racism, and economic inequality.
If passed into law, the bill will create an Office of Sustainable Schools within the U.S. Department of Education to administer new grant programs in collaboration with the Department of Energy. From there, schools and districts can take advantage of resources, including:
What’s more is that the Green New Deal for Public Schools will fund 1.3 million jobs a year and eliminate 78 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually — the equivalent of taking 17 million cars off the road.
Peace and love,
Jamaal Bowman
