Preventable Tragedy

What to Know: A Northern California man who depended on an oxygen supply died last week, shortly after PG&E cut power to hundreds of thousands of customers.

The TPPF Take: California’s power problems are self-inflicted—and deadly.

“Bad public policy has made electricity more expensive and less reliable in California,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “As wildfires linked to forest mismanagement kill people and destroy thousands of homes, and the power blackouts cost lives and billions in lost productivity, the politicians whose policies caused the problem blame climate change to absolve themselves.”

Coming Soon

What to Know: A ruling on the lawsuit against the Affordable Care Act, which TPPF is helping to lead, could come as soon as this month.

The TPPF Take: TPPF represents the individual plaintiffs who have been harmed by the ACA.

“For millions of Americans like our clients Neill Hurley and John Nantz, the Affordable Care Act has led to skyrocketing costs, rationed care, and loss of health care freedom,” says TPPF’s Rob Henneke. “We urge the Fifth Circuit to uphold the correct ruling by the federal district judge that Obamacare is unconstitutional and should be declared invalid in its entirety.”

Telemedicine

What to Know: A surge in telemedicine—doctor visits made remotely—is resulting in physicians getting licensed in multiple states, allowing them to treat even more people.

The TPPF Take: Telemedicine can help deliver health care to people in remote areas or after disasters.

“Telemedicine played a life-saving role during and in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “It enabled health care providers to set up remote telepharmacies, send medical records to on-site rescue personnel and diagnose infections caused by over-exposure to water. And its ability to help connect rural Americans to health care providers make it an important component in any future health care system.”
