Today marks the 1-year anniversary of the passing of a civil rights legend - Mr. John Lewis.
John Lewis’ legacy survives in all of us who are continuing his life-long fight for freedom, justice, and equality. And today his lessons in perseverance feel more important than ever.
“Your vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have to create a more perfect union.” - John Lewis
In the memory of John Lewis, join re:power, Indivisible, Rockefeller Family Fund, and others on July 28th at 12PM ET for our 2nd People-Powered Summer Panel - The Power of the People to Vote to learn more about how we, as organizers and activists, can fight back against the oppressive voting laws that are being enacted in states across the country.
Mr. Lewis died during a transformational year for our country - a year that shone a bright light on the deep roots of anti-black racism in all parts of our society, prompted by the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. And as the country reckoned with this reality, we barrelled forward toward the 2020 Presidential election - an election that was ultimately determined by the power of Black voters in states like Georgia and Wisconsin.
All of this laid the groundwork for what we have witnessed this year - a slew of state legislation targeting the voting rights of Black and Brown communities. In states like Arizona, Florida, Georgia, and Texas, anti-voter bills were introduced and enacted and we expect more to follow.1 These powerful bills will work to create roadblocks, block access, and even criminalize voting acts in these states.
re:power’s second People-Powered Summer Panel on July 28th will feature policy and organizing experts to discuss what we all can do to fight back against these unjust laws that will permanently alter voting rights.
John Lewis may no longer be physically with us, but we know if he was here he would be on the front lines speaking out against these laws and organizing his fellow Congressional Reps to protect our communities. That’s what John Lewis would do and we want to channel his energy by creating Good Trouble and standing up for our communities.
Thanks for all that you do,
Karundi Williams Executive Director
