Here’s why Attorneys General are so important – and how you can help them win.
Friend, Attorney General races are, much to our chagrin, one of the best-kept secrets in politics.
By that I mean: Your state AG can affect every part of your life, and if you want to create a better future for all, AG races are a surefire way to do it.
But AG elections get crowded out by bigger races; we have to fight twice as hard to get the funding, staff, and coverage we need to win against right-wing extremists.
Protecting our elections: While GOP AGs continue to peddle election fraud lies, Dem AGs have been busy protecting our votes – whether that’s suing to protect mail-in ballots or pushing for federal voter protections. As radical state legislators try to jam in new voter suppressions across the country, Dem AGs will be critical in shutting them down.
Pushing hard for criminal justice reform and police accountability: Minnesota AG Keith Ellison led the prosecution against Derek Chauvin, which ended in the rare conviction of a police officer. Dem AGs have worked with their state legislatures and led the charge to reform criminal justice and policing across the nation. It’s undeniable that Dem AGs have a frontline role in making our justice system fairer for everyone – and that down-ballot Democrats are critical to protecting our communities.
Defending our health care. When Republican AGs tried to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA) even during the pandemic, Dem AGs jumped to defend it at the Supreme Court – a lifeline for the millions of people who depend on the ACA to stay safe, healthy, and financially secure. Since last year, Dem AGs have been on the frontlines of this battle, and they’re not giving up now.
Friend, that’s just a quick glimpse into the work Dem AGs do to further justice and progress in our communities every day.
