Supporting our Police Officers
Yesterday, I led a roundtable discussion with sheriffs from across Louisiana's First District to talk about the recent surge in violent crime in cities across America and reinforced my support for local police departments as they work to keep communities and businesses safe. Being a police officer is a tough job. It's a tough job in good times. But even in days like today, we've never needed the men and women who put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe more than we do now. It's what makes our communities stronger — knowing that if something goes wrong, we can call on law enforcement.
I would not be alive today if it wasn't for the bravery and heroism of police officers who saved me and so many other Members of Congress that day on the ball field four years ago. I know first-hand the sacrifices that they make.
They're also dealing with a lot of challenges, and we talked about some of the things that are happening on the ground and how we at the federal level can help law enforcement be successful, while not undermining the things that they need to do to keep our communities safe.
Protecting South Louisiana Families and Small Businesses
This week, Congressman Garret Graves and I announced that we have secured $19.3 million in funding for a major component of the Morganza-to-the-Gulf Project in a House Energy and Water bill. This exclusive construction funding opportunity dedicated to Morganza through the Army Corps of Engineers will help advance the construction of a key floodgate of the project.
Morganza-to-the-Gulf will provide critical flood protection for the thousands of families and businesses who call South Louisiana home. I’m proud to have worked with Congressman Graves to secure these vital dollars and will continue fighting to ensure the Morganza project receives all the resources needed for its completion.
This announcement is another step toward completing Morganza-to-the-Gulf and protecting the billions of dollars in economic activity transported through our state.
Opposing Funding for Abortions
Earlier this week, nearly all of the Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee voted to eliminate Hyde Amendment protections, allowing taxpayer dollars to fund abortions.
For nearly five decades, the Hyde Amendment enjoyed strong bipartisan support in saving more than 2 million unborn lives from the horrors of abortion, but those protections are now under threat from Speaker Pelosi and her allies.
I remain committed, along with all my fellow House Republicans, to continue fighting with every tool we have to ensure that the Hyde Amendment remains in place.
It is an honor to represent you in Congress. For more information, please visit my website, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook pages.
