John,
Today marks the one-year anniversary of the passing of Representative John Lewis.

Lewis and I grew up in the same town of Troy, Alabama. From an early age, Lewis was a fighter through and through, and from his days organizing sit-ins at segregated lunch counters to participating in the Freedom Rides of 1961, he never let fear or hatred stand in the way of what he knew was right.

As a representative of our great state of Georgia, his dedication to service and his community shined once more, calling for healthcare reform and educational improvements, but most of all fighting for voting rights for all and overseeing multiple renewals of the Voting Rights Act. This commitment to broadening our democracy and making America a place where truly everyone has a voice is an inspiration to me every day.

I strive to even scratch the surface of the change that John Lewis created, and that starts with working to counter any measures aimed at making voting more difficult for certain groups, especially Black Americans. With the latest Supreme Court ruling in favor of some of these horrendous pieces of legislation, it’s on us, the states, now to ensure that our democracy flourishes in this time of peril.

To honor the legacy of John Lewis, I urge you to join me in our fight to protect voting rights in both Lewis’ home state of Georgia and across the country.

Let’s create the inclusive and truly democratic country that Representative Lewis fought so hard for.

Good trouble,
Marcus Flowers
