It’s been a year since Representative John Lewis’s passing, and we’re thinking about his life, his legacy, and his unyielding commitment to improving our democracy.
We’re also thinking about something he said a lot—that we need to get into “good trouble, necessary trouble.” Fighting for what is right, in spite of the consequences.
And there’s a lot to fight for. Right now, much of what John Lewis championed is in jeopardy. From coast to coast, we’re facing down one of the worst voter suppression campaigns our country has seen in decades.
The good news? The spirit of good trouble is alive and well. We’ve seen it just this week, when Texas Democrats left the special legislative session and went to D.C., stopping voter suppression laws in their tracks.
John Lewis didn’t back down from a fight. And neither will we. In a few clicks, send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper and tell your community why fighting back against voter suppression with the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the For the People Act is so important. If you live in a community where you’ll be the dissenting voice—all the better!

When John Lewis talked about “good trouble,” he was speaking from experience.
He was the youngest member of the “Big Six,” the group who led the organizers of the March on Washington in 1963. He stood at the front of the march from Selma to Montgomery, which culminated in the “Bloody Sunday” confrontation between civil rights activists and Alabama State Troopers. His activism helped pave the way for the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and his advocacy in Congress helped strengthen our democracy.
We need that same energy today. Just this year, 17 states have enacted 28 new laws to suppress the vote. On Capitol Hill, Mitch McConnell and the Senate minority continue to abuse the filibuster, preventing passage of the legislation that would guarantee the vote to all citizens. And to top it all off, a few weeks ago the Supreme Court just rendered section two of the Voting Rights Act—the one John Lewis fought so hard to pass—nearly obsolete.
We're not going to sit idly by while the progress John Lewis and his generation fought for is stripped away. Send a pre-written letter to the editor to your local newspapers, educating your community on the importance of protecting voting rights.
