John, your action in support of the brave Texas legislators who
walked out rather than allow political partisans to decimate voters’
rights is needed immediately.
These courageous lawmakers are risking arrest by leaving the state to
shut down the legislature. Currently, they’re in our nation’s capital,
imploring Congress to finally address the voting rights crisis plaguing state after state.
They’re sending a clear message to every senator: if you don’t take immediate, bold action to overrule Mitch McConnell’s filibuster and pass a voting rights bill -- you’ll essentially be endorsing the Texas GOP’s voter suppression scheme.
This walkout is only a temporary measure. Unless Congress
passes the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights
Advancement Act, Texas Republicans will soon be free to put their racist
anti-voter law into effect.
It’s not just Texas we have to worry about either. States like
Florida and Georgia have already passed similarly disgraceful voter
suppression laws. And, if the Senate doesn’t act soon, these laws will lock millions of voters out of the all-important 2022 midterms.
John, if there’s one thing I’ve learned from the past five years,
it’s that our democracy is precious, but fragile. Defending it requires
that each of us do our part.
Right now, Common Cause is stepping up our Emergency Outreach. We’re
calling voters in key Senate states like West Virginia and Arizona --
and ramping up pressure on President Biden to call for an end to the
filibuster. We’re holding rallies and vigils across the country to urge
the Senate to act.
We simply can’t go back to the old politics as usual -- because that
is what gave us a president like Donald Trump in the first place.
The frightening fact is this: if we don’t seize this moment to
transform our democracy for the better -- that failure will create the
opportunity for another, more capable and dangerous version of Trump to
seek and win power. And that’d be a clear step toward the end of American democracy itself.
Our window of opportunity is still open -- but it’s quickly closing.
Quite frankly, we have just a few short months left before the 2022
mid-term campaign season begins. At that point, many lawmakers will be
more interested in raising money or spinning a message than governing.
That’s why I’m urging you to join these brave Texas lawmakers
-- and 1.5 million Common Cause members across the country -- in doing
your part in our shared struggle to save our democracy.
Common Cause’s grassroots and advocacy teams are pushing as hard as
humanly possible to pass these all-important democracy bills. All of us
are painfully aware that the window to deliver on this
once-in-a-generation challenge won’t be open for long. There’s a clear
path forward for the For the People Act in the Senate, but it’s up to
you and me to take it.
Our team is all in, and so am I -- now I’m writing you because we urgently need an infusion of resources to make that possible. Can you rush your contribution of $3 or more today?
I’m counting on you and the other members of Common Cause to
demonstrate that there’s a better path for our democracy -- and to show
millions of Americans what a truly responsive government that acts in
the public interest can do.
That’s why your action in the coming weeks is so important. What
each of us does will help determine the future for all of us.
I’m so grateful to know you’re on our side.
Karen Hobert Flynn, President
and the team at Common Cause
P.S. This evening, in commemoration of Rep. John Lewis’s passing one
year ago today, we will be holding vigils to demand that Congress act to
uphold his legacy -- by protecting our freedom to vote and rebuilding
our democracy. You can join us by finding an event near you >>
