We’re facing an all-out assault on women’s reproductive freedoms in our country. This year alone, eight states have passed incredibly restrictive anti-abortion laws, with more on the way.

Make no mistake: The end goal here is to overturn Roe v. Wade, outlaw abortion, and deny women in America their basic human rights.

We MUST elect strong, fearless women to Congress who will never compromise when it comes to our reproductive freedoms. That’s why I’m beyond proud to announce Off the Sidelines’ first 2020 endorsement: My friend, Marie Newman.

Marie is running in Illinois against Rep. Dan Lipinski—a staunchly anti-choice Democrat who voted to defund Planned Parenthood and for a nationwide abortion ban.

Let me tell you a bit more about Marie:

She was born and raised in her Illinois district outside of Chicago. She was among the first in her family to go to college, founded a program to tackle bullying and became an advocate for children, health care, income inequality, and LGBTQ rights.

Marie’s primary opponent opposed Obamacare’s insurance coverage of birth control. He speaks at an annual anti-choice gathering and attends fundraisers for an extreme anti-choice organization.

Marie ran against him last year and came within just 2,000 votes of defeating him. In this solidly blue district, whoever wins the primary is all-but guaranteed general election victory. We have to help her close the gap this year because Illinoisans deserve leaders who will truly fight for all of them, including women seeking reproductive health care.
