In the constant movement that comes with my job, I sometimes have opportunities to quietly participate in the most amazing events.
This week provided such an opportunity. After a rush of important round tables and discussions with business leaders and families about recent and upcoming legislation, I spent a full evening in one of our ten counties attending the local “Valor” awards.
At the awards ceremony and dinner, local leaders recounted stories of first responders and community members who demonstrated exemplary courage in the face of danger. Volunteer firefighters who climbed into burning vehicles to extract and save passengers, police officers climbing precariously high towers to help those in crisis, and 911 operators demonstrating the extraordinary compassion and quick thought that saves lives.
Despite the unique challenges of my job — like the onslaught of attack ads and a reelection every two years — I love my job. I love serving the people of Virginia and this country, and I am grateful for every moment that I get to see the beauty and strength that exists in our communities.
