As far-right legislators in Texas attempt to ram through a series of bills that would drastically restrict the right to vote in the state, Texas Democrats are fighting back.
After staging a walkout in May to block these bills from passing, Democratic legislators have continued the fight by leaving the state during the special session that was called by Gov. Abbott – denying the legislature the quorum needed to conduct business.
Now, those Texas Democrats have come to Washington, DC as they make their case to Senate Democrats to break the filibuster and protect the right to vote in Texas and across the country.
With hundreds of bills that have been introduced in 48 states across the nation seeking to restrict the right to vote, the growing urgency in stopping these at the federal level cannot be overstated.
Congress has the power to mitigate these attacks by passing the For the People Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Act, but some have been hesitant to eliminate the filibuster in order to get this legislation passed.
We must keep up the pressure – especially on the few holdout Democrats in the Senate – and demand that they acknowledge the urgency of the moment and get these bills passed now, before it’s too late!
