Banning factory farms is good for farmers, animals, and the environment.
John,
At Food & Water Action, we’re fighting to change the fundamental structure of our current food system — including banning factory farms — to keep our food supply safe and sustainable.
Now we have a historic opportunity to move away from factory farms and help independent family-scale farms thrive. Senator Cory Booker and Representative Ro Khanna have reintroduced the Farm System Reform Act to transition our food system to a healthy, sustainable, equitable model.
This critical legislation would ban the construction of new factory farms (also known as concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs) and the expansion of existing ones. It would also phase out existing factory farms by 2040.
Factory farms put our health and food supply at risk. Their waste pollutes the environment and our drinking water. They wreck rural communities and put family farms out of business — all while tightening the corporate stranglehold on our food.
The Farm System Reform Act will overhaul our corporate-dominated food system by:
Stopping new factory farms from being built and existing factory farms from expanding;
Enforcing environmental laws on existing factory farms, including holding Big Ag companies responsible for the pollution created; and
Providing support for people operating factory farms to transition to more sustainable forms of agriculture.
The Farm System Reform Act also includes other vital reforms to restore fairness to livestock markets, so independent family farmers can make a fair living raising animals the right way.
The past year has shown how unjust and unfair our food system truly is. And we know the way we raise animals in the U.S. is unsustainable and cruel, but not inevitable.
In 2018, we were the first national organization to call for a ban on factory farms. Today our mission is more important than ever. The Farm System Reform Act is supported by more than 300 diverse groups and farmers across the country.
Food & Water Action and its affiliated organization, Food & Water Watch, are advocacy groups with a common mission to protect our food, water and climate.
