Updates from Faith Coalition for the Common Good and United Congregations Metro East (Illinois)
Coalitions around Illinois gathered on June 15 at the "All Hands On Deck: Rally for Fossil Fuel Future." Rev. Mike Atty of UCM emceed the rally and Tyshianna Bankhead, community organizer for FCCG, spoke on the impact of environmental injustices on her community and minorities.
"There comes a time when waiting is another word for a slow death," Bankhead said. "The people of Illinois do not want to wait no longer for the silent killer of Environmental injustice."
The rally took place when Illinois legislators were in Springfield to vote on a historic clean energy bill, and organizers called for bold, equity-centered legislation that puts Illinois on a path to a 100% clean energy future. This climate and energy bill provided a just transition for fossil fuel workers and communities, tackles pollution and climate change, enacts some of the toughest utility accountability measures in the nation and creates jobs and wealth in Illinois communities of color.
“This fossil fuels fight, the end of using fossil fuels to power our communities and our cities, is in need because our children need to breathe,” Atty said
