Gwynne celebrates local representation at Tokyo Olympics and cheers on Paralympic and Olympic athletes

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, is cheering on Paralympic and Olympic heroes in advance of Tokyo 2020.
Gwynne is also celebrating the news that local athlete Aimee Pratt has been selected by Team GB to represent the country in the 3000 metres steeplechase. Pratt, who is originally from Reddish, last year won the 3000 metres steeplechase at the British Athletics Championship and is one of the fastest in the world in the event.
This year’s Olympic games will start on Friday the 23rd of July, and the Paralympic games will follow on the 24th of August.
Pratt and other athletes have benefitted from significant funding both from the Government and the National Lottery. A recent study conducted by Sheffield Hallam University estimates that the industry around training Paralympic and Olympic athletes is worth over £25bn to the UK economy.
Andrew Gwynne said:
I’m so proud of what Aimee has achieved and wish her all the luck in the world ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games. It’s fantastic to have the local area and Manchester represented in such an iconic event. Over the last year Aimee has shown that she is a force to be reckoned with in the 3000m steeplechase, and I know we’re going to see some incredible things from her this summer.
It has been such a difficult 18 months, so even reaching the start line for athletes is a massive achievement.
So good luck to all the Team GB and ParalympicsGB athletes heading to Tokyo! The whole country is behind you!
