Here's what's happening after 19 July

People in Oldham should continue to wear face coverings, get vaccinated and keep getting tested, as Covid restrictions ease across the UK.

On Monday 19 July, “Step Four” of Coronavirus guidance will be implemented – effectively meaning the lifting of the majority of legal restrictions.

However, Oldham's Covid cases continue to rise and we have the highest rate in Greater Manchester. Our rate per 100,000 now stands at 640, up from 583 the previous week — significantly higher than the UK average.

Cllr Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, is urging people to be cautious and to keep protecting themselves and others.

She says: “We can’t blow it now. Even though it won’t be law to wear face coverings in public places, and to socially distance, I’m urging Oldhamers to continue to do so after 19 July, to keep yourselves and others safe.

"It’s also so important that everyone takes up the vaccination when it is offered; gets tested regularly; and self-isolates when asked to. There are walk-in vaccination clinics every day here in Oldham and it couldn’t be easier to get the jab which we know is saving lives and stopping people becoming seriously ill."

Time to get vaccinated

All adults in Oldham can now get vaccinated and we have a range of walk-in clinics that do not require an appointment and have parking on site:
  • 10am to 8pm every Wednesday at The Millennium Centre, Featherstall Road North, Oldham OL9 6QB
  • 10am to 8pm every Sunday at The European Islamic Centre, 79 Manchester Road, Oldham OL8 4LN
  • Until 25 July, various times at the Dinwoodie Centre, Royal Oldham Hospital, Rochdale Road, Oldham, OL1 2JH
  • 9:30am–6pm, 16 to 18 July, at South Chadderton Methodist Church, 25 Thompson Lane, Chadderton, OL98LX
  • 9am to 4pm on 18 July at the Pakistani Community Centre, Marlborough Street, OL41EG

Holiday Activities and Food Programme 🤸‍♂️⛹️‍♀️🤸🧘‍♂️

School holidays can be difficult for some families because of increased costs, such as food and childcare. This summer, Oldham Council is partnering with various community organisations across the borough to provide a range of free holiday clubs and activities for children and young people ages 5 to 16.
 
Free places, which include meals, are being offered to children who receive benefit-related free school meals. This will no doubt bring a great deal of reassurance to parents who may struggle financially during the holidays.
 
The programme is being funded by the Department for Education.

Looking for a job? 📢

We're advertising for more doorstep engagers, with salaries starting at £18,933 and contracts until 31 March 2022.

These roles are part of a planned response to higher incidents of Covid 19 in areas of Oldham. The role involves engaging with Oldham residents and communities to inform them of the current guidance, including the need to get vaccinated, test for Covid and help residents understand any support on offer if they need to self-isolate.

Keep getting tested 👍

Regular testing is one of the most effective ways of stopping the spread of Covid. We recommend getting a rapid lateral flow test at least twice a week and a PCR test if you are showing symptoms.

Have your say on the future of Oldham 📢

Shape the future of planning and development across the borough by taking part in our Local Plan consultation.

The Local Plan will guide development in Oldham up to 2037, setting the rules with which new homes and industrial buildings have to comply, and establishing where they can be built. It will also guide how we make decisions on whether or not planning applications can be granted.

Last Call: Local Improvement Fund application deadline ⏰
 

There's only one week left to submit your ideas for improving your local area. We have £500,000 to invest in local projects as part of this year’s Local Improvement Fund.

Whether it’s a suggestion for a new green space, improvements to local facilities like a nearby community centre, or even something that can help your area during our Covid recovery – your local councillors are ready to discuss your ideas and get the ball rolling on your behalf.

Councillors are submitting expressions of interest on your ideas until Friday 23 July as part of the funding process, with a further application and judging process taking place later this year to determine the successful ideas.

Covid guidelines for Greater Manchester

 
  • Greater Manchester residents are strongly encouraged to wear face coverings in crowded areas such as public transport.
 
  • Anyone using the Metrolink network, bus stations or transport interchanges in Greater Manchester must still wear a face covering unless exempt.
 
  • All adults get both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine
 
  • If you are meeting up with people, try and do so outdoors or if indoors to let fresh air in by opening doors and windows
 
  • Everyone takes free, regular lateral flow coronavirus tests twice a week.
 
  • Everyone washes their hands regularly for 20 seconds.
 
  • If you or anyone in your household has symptoms or tests positive you must self-isolate. You must also isolate if you are told to by NHS Test and Trace.
