Around a thousand people filled Virginia’s Capitol Square for the dedication Monday of statues honoring some of the state’s trailblazing women, part of a monument organizers say is unlike any other in the country. Victims of sexual assault must sometimes travel for hours, or from one hospital to another, because of a shortage in Virginia of qualified nurses and hospitals that provide sexual assault examinations, a new study has found. That helps to explain, in part, why less than half of sexual assault victims in Virginia report their attacks, according to Stephen Weiss, the author of the report titled “Forensic Nursing in the Commonwealth.”

Virginia met its deadline for mailing one-time tax refunds. Now, it’s up to the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the checks. The Department of the Treasury mailed the last of nearly 2.7 million refund checks on Friday under a compromise approved by the General Assembly and signed by Gov. Ralph Northam to compensate state taxpayers who paid higher taxes this year as an unintended consequence of federal tax changes.

Attorney General William Barr said it’s “dangerous to public safety” to elect progressive prosecutors who “style themselves as ‘social justice’ reformers.” Next month, his neighbors in suburban Virginia might do just that. Steve Descano is the Democratic nominee for commonwealth’s attorney in Fairfax County, where Barr resides. In June’s primary, Descano beat longtime incumbent Ray F. Morrogh, who had not faced a primary challenger since he was first elected in 2007. Morrogh took over the job 12 years ago from his old boss and mentor, who retired after 40 years in the position.
