In Congress, I’ve earned the nickname, “the tunnel-obsessed congresswoman,” because of my laser focus on advancing the Gateway Tunnel project.
And honestly, I’m pretty proud of the moniker -- especially today, because my colleagues and I are working to get shovels in the ground for Gateway a year earlier than originally expected!
This is a huge step forward for a crucial infrastructure project that has been held up for way too long.

We’re finally making progress on Gateway with the help of President Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s partnership on this project.
Recently, Secretary Buttigieg and I toured the current Hudson River Tunnel system and he got to see firsthand what me and New Jersey commuters have seen: an eroded, over 100-year-old tunnel system with degraded concrete and outdated technology.
Secretary Buttigieg and President Biden understand the imperativeness of this project -- not only for our region but for our country’s entire economy, which could be dealt a $16 billion blow if the tunnel were to shut down.
But it’s not only about the economics of Gateway -- the unreliableness of the current tunnel system has a personal impact on New Jerseyans. For them, it can mean missed soccer games or family dinners.
Gateway would modernize this critical transit hub that connects 200,000 commuters every day, and with the Biden Administration’s support, I know we can finally make it a reality for New Jersey commuters.
