With Texas being the only state slated to gain two congressional seats as a result of this year’s redistricting process, the stakes of the fight for democracy in the Lone Star State are high and the impact will last for years. That’s partly why the conservatives in the state have been ramping up their war on democracy.
FIRST: In May, the GOP-controlled legislature tried to force through SB7, one of the worst voter suppression bills in the country.THEN: After our movement called upon the legislature to vote “no” on the bill, Texas Democrats walked off the State House floor in a procedural move that prevented Republicans from having the quorum they needed to pass the bill.
NOW: Pro-democracy legislators have had to take drastic measures once again. A few days ago, they left Texas and went to Washington to deny the Texas GOP the quorum they needed to pass their voter suppression bill and to convince Congress to take action to protect the right to vote.
Our state-by-state strategy is key to securing a fair democracy. But -- as we can see in Texas, the other side is relentless in their pursuit to drown out the will of the people -- and that will include trying to manipulate the maps.

While Texas Democrats are urging Congress to expand and protect voting rights, we also need to ensure our political power is not diluted by gerrymandering.
We’re committed to making sure anti-democracy legislation like the bill being proposed in Texas never passes. But it’s not enough to win the fight on access to voting, we need to make sure the maps are fair when we go to the polls.
