Welcome to my October Newsletter covering national and local events. Inevitably Brexit remains the biggest topic, and later in the newsletter you can read the results of a recent survey I conducted on the issue. But there have been other important announcements.
The national living wage will rise to £10.50 over time, and the Government has committed to banning live animal exports. I know many people feel particularly strongly about this issue and will welcome the announcement.
Leafleting session
Please feel free to join me on Saturday 19th October in Ashford for an action day. If you would like to join me and the team in Ashford please do get in touch.

Results of my 2019 survey
The online version of my 2019 Survey revealed some interesting results about the attitudes of Ashford to both local and national issues. The three local issues identified by you as the most important were the William Harvey Hospital, traffic, and green spaces. I am determined to keep a full A&E service at the William Harvey and will continue to lobby Government hard on this. I have also kept in close contact with the Department of Health to ensure they are fully aware of local needs.
Turning to the big national issue in the survey, I am sorry to reveal that here in Ashford we are as divided as the country on Brexit. There is almost a 50/50 divide on whether we should remain or leave (which does not reflect the Referendum result, when Ashford voted 59% Leave). Of those who want to leave, there is another very close result between those who want a deal and those who prefer no deal.
In Parliament
Much Parliamentary business is still focused on Brexit. By clicking on the button below you can read some of the contributions I have made in recent weeks.

** Around Ashford
------------------------------------------------------------
As always I have been visiting a number of businesses, schools and community projects around the Borough to listen to people’s concerns. Here are some of the places I have visited in the past few weeks.
I have been putting pressure on the Transport Department and Highways England to ensure that the M20 and the junctions on it, including the new Junction 10A, are ready for Brexit Day on October 31^st. I have made interventions in Parliament about this and have received here ([link removed]) the latest from Highways England.
I recently spent a day with Ashford Police, going out on both a foot patrol in the town centre and with an emergency response team all around the area. It is always useful to see the range of problems the police deal with on a daily basis, and how professional they are. I am delighted that the new money from the Government has enabled the Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Scott to add another 147 new officers to the Kent force, on top of the extra officers he is already recruiting.
