Today, working families in Vermont and all across the country will begin receiving expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC) checks of up to $300 per child in their bank accounts, each and every month for the rest of the year.
This extra money is possible because in March, together we passed the American Rescue Plan — a historic and vitally important bill that is helping us continue to recover from the pandemic.
As one of the most significant pro-family, anti-poverty programs since President FDR, this expansion of the Child Tax Credit is a lifeline that will cut child poverty in this country in half. In Vermont alone, 105,000 children in all parts of the state will benefit, and 4,000 children will be lifted above the poverty line.
This extra bit of cash in the pockets of working families each month can be the difference in paying the utility bills, keeping gas in the car, or being able to afford food, clothing, health insurance or child care.
This is the progress we have been fighting for and will go a long way toward providing security, comfort, and dignity to countless working families across the nation.
This expanded tax credit was passed as a temporary boost, and is set to expire next year. But the reality is that we still have a long way to go to eliminate poverty entirely, and to make sure every person in our country is afforded economic justice and security.
That's why I'm fighting in Congress to make this CTC expansion permanent, and why I'm asking for your support today:
