The purpose of public safety is for the government to protect its people from anything that may threaten their daily lives -- but the current law enforcement-driven approach to public safety
isn’t working. And it never has.
America’s approach to public safety has always left Black communities fearful and in suffering. Now, Rep. Cori Bush is introducing the People’s Response Act, which transforms public safety into a public health issue and funds community-based, community-centered approaches to public safety.
The People’s Response Act seeks to transform public safety from a system of violence to one of care. It’s a bill that centers around the advancement and well-being of the
people, and that’s why we’re working tirelessly to pass it.
If we don’t pass this bill, then we will continue to see violence and white supremacy plaguing our communities in the name of “public safety” through policing.

In any situation where someone is calling for help, the person responding should be equipped with the training and tools that best serve our communities.
If someone is having a mental health crisis, a police officer with a gun should not be showing up -- a licensed mental professional should. Someone who knows how to approach the situation, not someone who risks escalating a situation into a violent, perhaps fatal, one.
Inclusivity should have BEEN a priority of public safety. Holistic approaches should have BEEN a priority of public safety. Centering all aspects of health first should have BEEN a priority of public safety.
We are fed up with the current approach to public safety and demand transformative change to our approach that will not only better serve our communities, but also lead to the freedom and liberation of all Black people. A freedom where Black people can thrive, not merely survive. John, this is long overdue.
