The U.S. House of Representatives just passed a transportation spending bill that includes an amendment that would prohibit discharges of plastic pellets — “nurdles” — from plastic production facilities. In media coverage, supporters arguing for the amendment pointed to “a recent shareholder vote at DuPont as a sign of rising public concern” – that DuPont vote ([link removed]) was the record-breaking 81% vote in favor we earned on our nurdle resolution!

That’s the highest vote ever for a shareholder resolution on an environmental issue that was opposed by management, and the first time (that we know of) that advocates have pointed to an As You Sow shareholder resolution in support of legislation.

Nurdles are the pre-production plastic pellets that are the precursors to almost all plastic products. Due to spills and poor handling procedures, trillions of nurdles are swept into waterways during production or transport annually, and are increasingly found on beaches and shorelines. Most estimates now flag nurdles as the 2nd largest source of ocean microplastic pollution by weight.

DuPont is just the latest company we’ve engaged on nurdles — we’ve been tasking companies on nurdle spills for three years now. So far, we’ve gotten reporting commitments (the first step in accountability) from Chevron Phillips Chemical, Exxon Mobil Chemical, Eastman Chemical, Westlake Chemical, Occidental Petroleum, and Dow Chemical.
