One year ago this Saturday, Congressman and lifelong Civil Rights activist John Lewis passed away. He left behind an inspiring legacy -- every day of his life, even in his final months as his health deteriorated, he stood on the frontlines of the fight for voting rights and racial equity. He fought for the desegregation of all public spaces; he was a founder of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee -- an organization that led the first lunch-counter sit-ins; he aided in the organization of the March on Washington; in 1965, he led what would become one of the best-known civil rights marches in American history -- a march that is believed to mark one of the most pivotal moments in the voting rights movement -- on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, AL, where he and 600 others were beaten by state troopers.

The image of Mr. Lewis brutally injured by law enforcement for simply demanding the voting rights he and so many others had been denied made waves across the country and garnered support for the Voting Rights Act. The march helped move the cause forward, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson eight days later.

Mr. Lewis’s work to make our country truly equitable is, frankly, impossible to capture in one single email, but what we want you to know is that he fought his whole life for equality. Even when he faced violence and a lack of support at every turn, he kept going because he believed this fight was worth it. This Saturday, on the anniversary of his death, we’re asking you to join us and honor his legacy by getting in ‘good trouble’ continuing the fight for voting rights for all.

Volunteers and partners across the country are organizing Good Trouble Vigils to honor the anniversary of Congressman Lewis’s death and as a national show of support for voting rights. We need you and your friends, family, and community together to show your support for the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act this weekend. Will you join us?
