Trickle-Down Clown Alert

There's a new trickle-down clown in town, and you may have seen his frosty tips on TV before: The celebrity chef Guy Fieri just went on the popular podcast "Sway" to advocate for restaurant owners but balked at any reform that would help restaurant workers.

Fieri is a giant in the restaurant industry: He recently signed an $80 million contract with Food Network and opened a nationwide chain of ghost kitchens – a restaurant entirely devoted to the preparation of delivery-only meals – in response to the pandemic. He's got deep pockets, and he's spending some of his money on philanthropy – but the issue is, he's also using his massive platform to spread misinformation about how the economy actually works and reforms restaurant workers need to survive.

During his interview on "Sway," Fieri said he's opposed to regulating the exploitative gig-economy apps like Doordash, which are milking both their delivery drivers AND small businesses with exorbitant fees to participate in their low-wage meal-delivery services. Even worse, Fieri repeats the familiar lie that restaurants are having trouble hiring workers because of the extra unemployment checks from the pandemic relief program.

There's no truth to this theory that workers are just "lazy" and want to rely on unemployment. The job-search company Indeed reports that more people are looking for work in states that still provide the extra $300 unemployment payments per week. The reality is, people have looked at the horrible conditions at low-paying restaurants and have decided they'd rather switch careers.

Of course, if you take a closer look at Fieri's Flavortown, it becomes clear WHY he's against worker protections. We know our supporters can see through Fieri's trickle-down views that let restaurant owners get rich while their workers struggle to make ends meet – but we've created a quiz to test your knowledge. Think you can guess why this beloved Food Network host is spouting trickle-down nonsense, John? Take our quiz before 11:59 p.m. tonight:
