It is tempting to think that we can just go back to some happier political time.

John,

In 2006, pundits suggested that the House would use the power of the purse to turn off George W. Bush's Iraq War spending.

No, Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi said, we must think of the troops.

When Democrats regained the House after blue wave in 2018, we hoped the resurgent People's House would use its power to block and frustrate the administration. Instead, we have been left incredulous as, yet again, Speaker Pelosi has conceded to a right wing president.

On June 17, President Trump shocked Americans—who are highly immune to Trump shocks by now—with a threat: ''Next week ICE will begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States. They will be removed as fast as they come in."

Yesterday, Pelosi met privately with VP Mike Pence before leading House Democrats in a split vote to help Republicans pass Sen. Mitch McConnell's $4.6 billion funding bill for more crackdowns on immigrants. We must, Pelosi said, think of the children.

The spectacle of following a threat of mass immigrant removal with Democratic approval for billions in no-strings-attached funds to expand and improve the U.S. system of concentration camps is so outrageous as to be ludicrous.

Sadly, we know too well Pelosi's history of supporting the American oligarchy over human lives. We saw it with the Iraq War. We saw it with the environmental racism pervading the toxic pollution of Hunters Point. We see it yet again with this new capitulation to Trump and his cruel "border" policy.

We are running because the system must change. We are a movement that says, "No!" to immigrant concentration camps. We say, "No!" to war with Iran. And we say "Yes!" to every tool that Congress must use to combat Trump and stop fascism from seizing our country.

It is tempting to think that we can just go back to some happier political time. We can't. Not after seeing the cruelty of our policies at home and around the world exposed in loud fashion as only Trump could. We can't go back. We can only go forward.
