At a small ribbon-cutting ceremony, our founding library sponsor Zarina Ram shared her hopes for the project: "My wish is that this little library will give women and children who have survived oppression a chance to experience empathy by walking in another's shoes through the books they read; an escape to a world beyond that which they know, which will inspire them to dream bigger than they could’ve ever imagined; and a platform to create a future that enables them to realize their deepest desires and passions." Why It's Important for Kids to See Themselves in Books "It is really essential that we fill our kids' home libraries with books featuring characters that look like them. Here are three important reasons why." Learn More and See Recommended Reading Lists "Filling your kids' reading diet with books that act as mirrors and windows allows for a deeper and more well-rounded reading experience for them. Help your kids find titles where they see themselves, and beyond." —Jodie Rodriguez, Scholastic "Students should not only see themselves in books, but also see and learn about those different from themselves." —Valerie Bolling, International Literacy Association Help Kids Connect with Doorways' Mission Visit our Kids' Corner for a recommended reading list of books relating to Doorways' mission. Project PEACE Survey Everyone deserves to be safe at home and in their relationships. When someone in our community is not safe and is being hurt by their partner, there are resources to help. Please consider taking one of these surveys to share your experience using, looking for, or referring people to resources for those impacted by domestic/intimate partner/dating violence and sexual assault in Arlington County. You may take both surveys as applicable. While the survey works best on a computer, you may also use a mobile device. Survey for Arlington Community Members Survey for Arlington Service Providers This survey was created by Project PEACE, Arlington's Coordinated Community Response, in order to understand how Arlington community members have, or have not, accessed local support. This survey is confidential and results will be analyzed by Project PEACE and their members to enhance and improve services for everyone in the county. Events Save the Date!
