The Texas law we're trying to block (SB 8) bans abortion at six weeks. That's before many people even know they're pregnant. If it goes into effect, this law will let politicians, neighbors, and even complete strangers sue anytime someone tries to access abortion in the state after six weeks. It even implicates the patient's loved ones who help them access care.
Let's be clear: This law is an attempt to force all health centers that provide abortion in Texas to close, and to prevent people from accessing abortion.
It's designed to systematically isolate patients who seek abortion. This law will disproportionatly harm people of color, people in rural areas, and people with low incomes — communities who already face barriers to accessing abortion today. And SB 8 is meant to intimidate abortion providers by forcing them to choose between providing health care or risking ruinous financial penalties, legal costs, and court orders.
