Today, July 15, 2021, millions of American families will receive the first of monthly child tax credit payments of up to $300 per child. These payments are a result of the American Rescue Plan -- which I helped to pass and President Biden signed into law. I was raised by a single mom who was a public school teacher, so I know how hard it can be for working families. It’s why I was proud to vote for this benefit that will put more money directly in the pockets of North Texans.
Here are some key things to know about the Child Tax Credit payments:
- The Child Tax Credit was expanded to $3,600 for children under age 6 and to $3,000 for children ages 6 to 17. (The payment amount decreases for single parents earning more than $75,000 per year or married couples earning more than $150,000 per year).
- Half of the credit will be paid in monthly payments of $250 or $300 (depending on the age of the child) to deliver more immediate relief to families, and the remainder will be paid out upon filing 2021 tax returns.
- Payments will go out automatically from the IRS, starting today, July 15, 2021, as long as you’ve filed your taxes for 2020.

I have two young boys so I know how expensive and time-consuming parenting can be. And these payments will help roughly 85% of children in Texas’ 32nd Congressional District. I was proud to vote to deliver this benefit that can help folks pay for child care, groceries or whatever expenses parents have raising a family.
