Get a whiff of the future
with CCL's 'Smells Like Climate Change' contest

Ever wonder what the world will smell like in the future if climate change continues on its current course? CCL’s Marketing team did, and they’ve just launched a campaign — “Smells Like Climate Change” — to let everyone know it will really stink if we don’t put a price on carbon.

With the aim of generating some buzz and initiating conversations about pricing carbon, the team created “air fresheners” with three different scents that were sent to social media influencers and journalists — Burnt Pine, Smoggy City, and Bleached Reef

"This is a fun, creative way to get people's attention, and get them talking about a price on carbon at the same time," said CCL creative consultant Nick Huey.

Want to be the proud owner of these climate inaction scents? Go to our post on Instagram and follow the rules to enter our contest. Ten winners will receive a set of all three. Deadline is next Wednesday, July 21.

In other news:

New climate group on the scene: A new climate-focused political action committee (PAC), called the Americans for Action on Climate Fund, has entered the political arena. The group's mission, as stated on their website, may resonate with CCL supporters: "We support both Democratic and Republican candidates for U.S. Congress who will introduce and pass effective legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions." You can learn more about the organization on its website or by attending their informational event this Thursday at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.

Braver Angels workshop: Our toxic polarization has its origins in the conversations we have with like-minded people about those on the “other side.” In a workshop with Braver Angels on July 25, learn how to depolarize discussions that veer into demonizing people we disagree with. Details and registration here.

Jobs available with CCL: Citizens’ Climate Education is currently hiring for three full time positions: Research Coordinator, Grant Writer, and Communications Coordinator. We are also hiring for two six-month-long contract positions: Indiana Conservative Climate Field Organizer, Utah Conservative Climate Field Organizer.

Media: CCLers part of bipartisanship story

In November of 2019, the last time CCL held an in-person conference in Washington, volunteers from Arkansas sent a press release to media contacts about their state’s delegation heading to D.C. A Washington correspondent for the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, Frank Lockwood, came to the Omni Shoreham hotel and talked to the volunteers. No story appeared at the time, but a connection was made that would bear fruit a year and a half later when the group sent out another press release, this time about Arkansas’ Republican senators, John Boozman (shown above) and Tom Cotton, voting in favor of the Growing Climate Solutions Act.

Last week, Lockwood wrote an article about the shifting position of Republicans on climate change, citing Senate passage of the bipartisan Growing Climate Solutions Act and the formation of the Conservative Climate Caucus. CCL was part of the story:

Jan Schaper, Arkansas co-coordinator for the Citizens' Climate Lobby, said she was encouraged to see broad bipartisan support for the Growing Climate Solutions Act. "That, in and of itself, shows people in Congress can work together," she said. Members of Citizens' Climate Lobby, a nonpartisan, nonprofit environmental group, had met with Boozman at least four times to voice support for the measure, the organization said.

If you have an event or other news you want to publicize, CCL offers templates to help you draft press releases you can send to local media.
