Jack, earlier this month, Texas Democratic leaders blocked a voter suppression bill by walking out of the Texas House to deny Republicans a quorum. Then, they flew to Washington, D.C. to demand Congress take action to protect the voting rights of all Americans.

As of June 21, 17 states have enacted 28 laws that restrict access to voting. As Republicans in red and purple states accelerate their authoritarian, anti-democratic tactics to keep themselves in power, we are grateful to see fighters like the Texas Democrats take such a bold stand.

Their plea is our plea: Congress must pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act in order to protect voting rights for all Americans and cancel the rising tide of Republican voter suppression efforts in the states.

In protest of attacks on voting rights in Texas, a majority of Democrats in the Texas House left for Washington, D.C., denying Republicans the quorum needed to pass new voting restrictions. These Texas lawmakers arrived in D.C. where they will remain until August, urging Congress to protect our freedom to vote.

But it’s not just Texas. Across the country, our freedom to vote is currently under attack, with Republicans in 17 states passing new restrictions on voting just this year--all in support of Trump's Big Lie.

Congress must step in to put a stop to this. They cannot sit idly by while red state authoritarians seek to end democracy in our country.
