Dear MoveOn member,

Congressman John Lewis, a civil rights icon, was known for making "good
trouble"—taking action when he saw injustice and always advocating for
voting rights. Now, we're joining together to continue the fight to
protect our voting rights and democracy.

[ [link removed] ]Join MoveOn members, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human
Rights, and allies on the anniversary of Rep. Lewis's passing this Sunday
by attending a vigil in his memory and demanding that the Senate pass the
For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. RSVP now.

Almost 400 bills have been introduced in statehouses across the country to
limit our voting rights.^1 Here are some of the lowlights:

* This week, Republican Texas lawmakers voted to arrest Texas House
Democrats for boldly taking action to prevent a bill that would
criminalize voters and decrease access to voting.^2
* Georgia Republicans enacted a law restricting early voting days,
designed to hurt Black churches' "Souls to the Polls" initiatives to
vote together on Sundays.^3
* Four states—Arkansans, Iowa, Montana, and Wyoming—have enacted new or
stricter voter ID requirements.^4

Texas House Democrats, currently facing arrest for their protection of our
voting rights, have repeatedly called on the Senate to pass the For the
People Act as soon as possible to combat these attacks on voting rights
nationwide.^5

[ [link removed] ]Rise in solidarity with these heroic Texas Democrats and honor the
legacy of civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis by joining a vigil this
Saturday, July 17, near you.

The For the People Act, known as H.R.1 in the House and S.1 in the Senate,
was primarily written by Rep. Lewis before his passing. It is a bold step
toward reducing the racial and economic inequalities in our political
system. It would strengthen our democracy by expanding voting rights,
reducing the influence of big money in politics, taking on corruption, and
setting minimum standards that would make many of the voter suppression
bills currently being proposed and enacted illegal.

We don't have any time to waste. Democrats have a slim majority in the
Senate, the Republican attacks are not slowing down, and the next election
is already being planned. Nothing less than our democracy is at stake.

[ [link removed] ]RSVP now to join a Good Trouble vigil this weekend to demand the
passage of the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.

Thanks for all you do.

–Emma, Jenn, Emily, Amanda, and the rest of the team
