❌ Is the PRO Act really pro-worker? NO. Yet, many legislators are still advocating for it despite the bill being a clear destruction of contract work that many workers—particularly women—rely on.

  • Nearly half (46%) of the independent contractor workforce is female.
  • Women are more likely than men to be employed in an alternative work arrangement.
  • Flexible contract work allows women to balance employment with caregiving for children, sick spouses, and aging parents or other priorities.

Biden’s Business Order Is Not Just Big, It’s Burdensome

President Joe Biden recently signed a sweeping new executive order granting federal agencies more power to meddle in private marketplace and businesses. While the White House has pitched this 72-initiative order as a way “to promote competition in the American economy,” it seems more like a grab-bag of random products and industries that are targeted for micromanagement. Share this story.

Single-Payer Health Coverage Is Not the Same as Medical Care

By eliminating private healthcare options and creating more paperwork and regulations to manage while keeping rates artificially low, a single-payer system decreases flexibility and increases overhead, which naturally leads to less options for a patient to choose from. While it is true that such a system would provide health coverage for all citizens, it does not follow that it would ensure quality care. Care is not the same as coverage. Health coverage does not guarantee immediate access to quality health providers. Read more.

TWO TRUTHS & A LIE

American Energy vs. OPEC

President Biden has called climate change “the existential crisis of our time”.

Can you identify which of the following is NOT true about American energy?

A.
To fight climate change, the Biden administration says it wants to reduce U.S. oil and gas production by limiting reliance on fossil fuels.
B. With gas prices skyrocketing, the Biden administration is now asking the foreign Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) oil cartel to pump more oil—a fossil fuel—so that U.S. gasoline prices can fall.
C. The Biden administration has saved American jobs in the oil and gas industry, prioritizing them over foreign OPEC jobs.

CAPSULE REVIEW

Coming Back To Work

We still need more people to rejoin the labor force, but the June jobs report was encouraging. The headline number from the June jobs report was impressive, with non-farm payrolls increasing by 850,000 beating expectations. At the same time, the long-term-unemployment share—that is, the portion of the unemployed who have been jobless for 27 weeks or longer—went back up in June, from 40.9% to 42.1%. Both figures remain well below their pre-pandemic levels.

The Don’t-Let-Your-Head-Explode Guide To Trump’s Social Media Lawsuits

When you use Google—a target of former President Donald Trump’s lawsuits—to search for information about his recently-filed social media lawsuits, you find headlines declaring “As Stupid as You’d Think” and “Trump Files Sweeping, Nonsensical Lawsuits.” Even if true, the clear bias is not helpful for a reader who would like to think for herself.
