Right now, we have billionaires dumping untold amounts of money into a private space race, competing to literally get out of this world. Billionaires who pay little or absolutely nothing in taxes to support our infrastructure and social services.
Meanwhile, we have people all over the country, including right here in Iowa, who are struggling just to get by — folks who are wondering how they’re going to pay next month’s rent, who can’t afford to keep the refrigerator and kitchen cupboards stocked with food for their families, or who are scraping by to pay their student loans or medical bills.
In this country, we’ve empowered the uber-wealthy to make so much money they can build rockets to space, while far too many people lack access to the basic necessities to survive. There’s something very wrong with that picture.

I believe we should be paying teachers more and investing in our kids’ public schools. I believe we should make healthcare affordable and accessible for everyone. I believe we need to stop giving corporations and the wealthiest few massive tax breaks and bailouts, and start funding social services that people depend on.
