Jack, Fox News is walking a thin line as it serves up lies like red meat to their rabid viewers. Just how thin? The network has taken steps to stymie any legal troubles:
-
Fox News' most popular TV personality, Tucker Carlson, claims, with absolutely no evidence that the NSA has been monitoring his electronic communications. Meanwhile, to Carlson's disappointment, the network executives have refused to have his back and put out any sort of statement on the claims.
-
Fox News backed Trump and his lies about voter fraud during the 2020 election. They even pushed conspiracy theories about voting machine irregularities, only to have to walk those back to avoid lawsuits. The network continues to try to protect itself from any sort of legal action, even going so far as to add disclaimers to Trump's aired speeches.
-
Even though Fox News has produced a PSA promoting COVID-19 vaccinations, it doesn't stop many of its television personalities from pushing more and more harmful conspiracy theories. Again, Tucker Carlson has said that young people “ shouldn’t get the shot” because it is, he falsely claimed, more dangerous than COVID-19 while others on the network have compared vaccine requirements to an apartheid.
One of the worst things about all of Fox News' lies and falsehoods, which have cost the network dozens of advertisers over the years, is that it still has the highest cable news network in the country. Not just that, Fox News crushed the competition; CNN saw a 68% drop in viewership in the second quarter of this year. Worst of all, Tucker Carlson's primetime show is consistently the top rated show.
With all those people watching the network, you would think there would be more lawsuits, but alas, the network's lawyers have little respect for the audience, saying; the "'general tenor' of the show should then inform a viewer that [Carlson] is not 'stating actual facts' about the topics he discusses and is instead engaging in 'exaggeration' and 'non-literal commentary.' " In other words, no reasonable person would believe the words that come out of Tucker Carlson's mouth.
