President Biden’s impassioned speech on the GOP’s assault on voting rights and election integrity captured the urgency of this moment — Republicans are undermining our democracy, our liberty, and our sacred right to vote. But we need to go further. We need to demand that the Democratic Senate abolish the filibuster and protect voting rights without delay. Trump and McConnell went around the filibuster to install Barrett, Kavanaugh, and Gorsuch on the Supreme Court. And to ram through tax cuts for billionaires and corporations. Now Democrats must act and eliminate the filibuster — especially for something as sacred as voting rights. Already one of the most difficult states to cast a ballot, Texas Republicans are looking to pass a slew of new voting restrictions after the state’s highest election turnout in almost 30 years. By making people wait longer, travel farther, and choose from fewer options, Republicans are striving to make it as difficult and inconvenient as possible for Americans to vote. That’s not to mention that virtually every measure has a disproportionate impact on communities of color. We cannot allow our last, best opportunity to pass H.R. 1 and protect voting rights to slip away. Because these same Republicans suppressing the vote will stop at nothing to gerrymander their way into power for the next decade. We must not let the filibuster prevent us from protecting voting rights. The only way we can stop this new wave of voter suppression and election subversion is by ensuring passage of H.R. 1 and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. As President Biden so rightly asked: “Are you on the side of truth or lies, facts or fiction, justice or injustice, democracy or autocracy?” If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your split donation to Adam Schiff and the Texas Democratic Party will go through immediately: It’s never been more clear that we need to abolish the filibuster to pass H.R. 1 and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect and uphold our democracy. I won’t stop fighting. And I know you won’t either. Thank you for playing such a critical role in this important work. — Adam |
