It’s World Chimpanzee Day!

JULY 14

On this World Chimpanzee Day we invite you to the world premiere of A Checkered Past, a short film about 42 chimpanzees who remained at California’s Wildlife Waystation after it unexpectedly closed in 2019, and the search to find them forever homes. Animal advocates Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara visited the chimps and lent their voices to narrate this moving story.

While several of these chimpanzees, most of whom were born in a lab, have already been transferred to new homes, 26 still remain at the Waystation, where they are under constant threat of wildfires. Sanctuaries have stepped up to take in the remaining chimps. But first, they must expand their facilities so they can provide the chimpanzees with the best care possible. AAVS, its members, and other donors have given generously to help cover those costs but much more is needed.

Hear their story!

A Checkered Past will be sure to inspire you, and there’s no better way to celebrate World Chimpanzee Day than by helping some deserving chimps in need of new sanctuary homes.
