As you may know, I have been taking some of July off of the web to be with family. But today I had to make an exception for my best friend, my brother, my peer hero Lee Merritt.
Listen. I’ve known Lee for over 20 years since we were teenage boys at Morehouse College. He is the most fearless, relentless, determined, focused, committed man I know.
Side by side I’ve worked with Lee on over a hundred cases of police violence and racial injustice – most of them right there in Texas – and have witnessed up close and personal not just his mastery of the law, but the fierceness of his love of justice.
I’ve watched him walk families through unthinkable pain, loss, tragedy, and grief.
I’ve watched him go to horrific autopsies.
I’ve watched him plan funerals and press conferences and marches and protests.
I’ve watched him write legal briefs.
I’ve watched him physically confront police officers and prosecutors on behalf of families.
I’ve watched him have to study videos of police violence down to the millisecond.
I’ve watched him actually get justice and accountability for families.
I’ve watched him represent families that everybody else said no to and gave up on.
I’ve literally seen him work 48 hours straight without sleep in the pursuit of justice.
And that’s why we need him to be Attorney General of Texas.
Did you see what Keith Ellison has been able to do as Attorney General of Minnesota. The cops that killed George Floyd might still be free without him.
Well, imagine what could be done with Lee as AG of Texas?!
The current Attorney General there – Ken Paxton – is the worst in the country. He’s under indictment himself for breaking the law. He’s prosecuting formerly incarcerated Black women and men for simply trying to vote. And we have to stop him!
