When I entered the House, I became fast friends with my colleague, Virginia Rep. Abigail Spanberger.
We quickly discovered we have a lot in common: We both served our country overseas, we're both the oldest of three girls, we’re moms of young children, we both turned seats blue for the first time in decades back in 2018, and we both won tough re-elections last year.
Now, Abigail and I have another thing in common: We both have new Republican opponents challenging us in 2022. In fact, our opponents announced their candidacies on the same exact day and were featured together in a Fox News article.
Both of our opponents racked up tens of thousands of dollars in the hours following their campaign launches to fuel their bids for NJ-11 and VA-07. I’m proud to work alongside Abigail in Congress every day. We’ve fought for legislation to expand access to health care, advance important infrastructure projects, and increase gun safety.
And recently, Abigail and I introduced a bipartisan measure that would help folks who lost their jobs during the pandemic return to work.
I’ve talked to New Jersey small business owners who are having a hard time finding and hiring employees as the economy begins to open back up. At the same time, workers are facing barriers to re-entering the workforce like the cost of transportation and child care.
Our bill would give workers 60% of their unemployment insurance benefits when they return to work, helping them make the transition, keeping families out of poverty, and speeding up our country’s economic recovery.
I want to keep working with Abigail on legislation that will make a real and tangible impact on the lives of New Jerseyans, Virginians, and Americans across the country. But our races are once again shaping up to be some of the most competitive in the country, and they’ll play a decisive role in control of the House next year.
