Friend, As I tried to make sense of the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse last week, it was a blessing to join a regularly scheduled call with our sisters and brothers from Haiti and the Haitian diaspora. It brought home the life and death consequences of political violence for everyday people. And the remarkable courage of Haitians who are still struggling for self-determination. The leaders of OPODNE, Faith in Action’s Haitian affiliate, asked us to keep them in our prayers and keep our pressure on the Biden Administration to do right by Haiti. We agreed to continue pushing President Biden to send vaccines to Haiti, one of five countries yet to receive a single dose. Please support this campaign, which is gaining momentum, by adding your name to our petition. And please share the petition with your family and friends. Let’s demonstrate that Haiti’s struggle is our struggle. We will not let them stand alone! We also pledged to redouble our efforts through A Way Forward in Haiti to change U.S. policy toward Haiti. The days of U.S. officials dictating the lives of the Haitian people, hand-picking Haitian leaders and backing corrupt elites to keep a lid on Haiti must end. Haiti needs a broad inclusive transitional government to pave the way to a return to democracy. I also want to encourage you to consider making a donation to support OPODNE’s efforts to stop the spread of COVID in Northeast Haiti and increase access to good quality primary health care in the rural communities where they organize. OPODNE’s strength is well-trained and organized local leaders - many of whom are women - who are transforming their communities through their love and care. |
