wide awake action under sunrise dc logo

Sunrise DC Newsletter: July 13, 2021

Hey John!

We're back with some updates... and more ways for you to plug in!

On July 4th, Sunrise DC and partners hosted the second of the abolition workshops, titled “Fourth of You Lie” -- we learned about US imperialism, discussed why we don't celebrate “independence day”, and raised $67 in cash for the Line 3 water protectors in Minnesota! Look out for our next workshop on the 18th!

Sunrise DC recently dropped our new principles! These are principles that, as a hub, we will bear in mind and act on as we proceed in our work. Check them out on our website here!

Last week, a coalition of mutual aid groups, ANCs, and Sunrise DC came together to stop the eviction of an encampment in Ward 2. You can learn more about the organizing effort and residents impacted here. If you are able, we encourage you to donate to Remora House, Ward 2 mutual aid, or your own Ward mutual aid group (1, 3, 4, 5, 6, East of the River), and stay tuned for more updates!

When we work together, we win.

Stomping Out Injustice

TONIGHT @ 6pm
We've been working with the family of Billie Allen, who was convicted of a crime he never committed when he was 19. Join us tonight for a powerful discussion with thought leaders, activists, and directly impacted families about ending the death penalty and sending an innocent man home. Get a ticket to the virtual event here.

Reggaeton Bash at Rock Creek Park
Saturday, July 17 @ 6-8pm
The past year and a half has been difficult for a lot of us in organizing spaces, but this does not mean there is no space for joy! So familia, JOIN US this Saturday at Rock Creek Park Picnic Grove #2A North for our in-person Reggaeton bash!

Sunrise DC Open Hub Meeting

Wednesday, July 28 @ 6-7:30pm

Come to our July Open Hub Meeting and bring your friends! Be part of the movement to attempt a future survivable for humanity. Register here!

Mountain Valley Pipeline Action

August 7-10
DC climate organizers, including our allies at Palm Collective and Arm in Arm, are taking a bus from DC/Harrisonburg, VA on August 7-10 to push back against the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Climate and racial justice activists from across the region will be training together and taking action to demand an immediate stop to the construction of the pipeline. You can read more context here and register here using the password "NoMorePipelines".

When we work together, we win.
