I know this past year has been hard.

So many Americans didn't know if they would be able to pay for things like housing, child care, and bills.

But the truth is, for many those things have always been hard, even before the pandemic.

When I was young, my family struggled financially after my father lost his job. We moved all over the country as my parents looked for work.

I was lucky, because communities invested in families like mine. That support was critical to my success.

But many children today aren't so lucky. It's become harder for many families to reach the middle-class and we still haven't done enough to invest in children and their future.

That's why my colleagues and I introduced legislation to expand the Child Tax Credit that would help lift up kids and families -- just like yours -- and rebuild the middle class.

The American Rescue Plan includes my historic proposal to send families monthly payments of up to $300 per child -- that's up to $3,600 per year for the 1.4 million middle-class and low-income children living in Washington.

Imagine what this could do for a struggling family.

But this is only a temporary fix -- for one year. We must make the Child Tax Credit expansion permanent and cut childhood poverty in half. Washington families can't afford to go back.
