Hi John,

Greenpeace activists just dumped 625kg of plastic waste outside Downing Street to deliver Boris Johnson a message: stop dumping the UK’s plastic recycling on other countries.

The UK dumps 625kg of plastic waste on other countries every 30 seconds. [1] We’re sure the Prime Minister doesn’t like having plastic dumped on his doorstep - so why is the government dumping UK plastic on communities overseas?

Can you watch and share this video on Twitter and expose the government's failings on tackling plastic pollution?

Just over a month ago, a Greenpeace investigation found British plastic waste being dumped and burned on the roadside, near waterways and in the open air in Turkey. Not only is this harming wildlife and our oceans, but people nearby have reported serious health problems. Just a few days after the investigation, the Turkish government banned UK plastic waste imports. [2]

But now it looks like Turkey is going to u-turn on the ban thanks to industry lobbying. Industry lobbying that knows that UK plastic is dumped and burned on the roadside. We need action from the UK government to stop plastic at the source.

We need them to be the world leaders in tackling plastic that they claim to be and we need them to build back better. Because currently, the UK government is exploiting poorer countries, harming people's health and fuelling the plastic crisis. That’s why we’re taking action today - to expose the government’s hypocrisy.

Plastic is a popular issue, people across the country want the UK government to take proper action. Over 250,000 people have signed the petition, and 38 MPs from across the political spectrum have pledged to call on the government to stop plastic waste exports and reduce plastic. Some of the plastic we’re delivering today is collected from supporters like you who are extremely frustrated with the government’s lack of plastic action. Thank you to everyone that contributed!

Now, can you pile even more pressure on the government and make sure they see our message?

The good news is that the government now has to act. Turkey's u-turn has put them under even more pressure to act like leaders. They know people like us are watching to see whether they’ll act responsibly for people and the planet. Help us keep the pressure on.

Thanks for everything you do,

Anthony and the plastics team
