Dear Freedom for Immigrants' Supporters & Friends,

We hope you are all well and enjoying summer.  I’m writing with some exciting news and updates.

We released a new report in partnership with our friends at Immigrant Defense Project (IDP) and the Immigration Clinic at Cardozo Law School.  The report highlights the severe harms of ICE’s electronic ankle “monitoring,” or shackling, program (part of its Intensive Supervision Appearance Program, or ISAP). Freedom for Immigrants has long advocated against funding and use of ISAP, and this report bolsters our ability to demonstrate the harmful impacts of this inhumane extension of the immigration detention system.  The report, featured in yesterday's issue of the Guardian, is the first empirical study to document the nature and scale of the harms, racial disparities and lack of efficacy of ICE’s massive electronic shackling program. We encourage you to share with your friends and networks via Instagram and Facebook and include #StopShackling in your posts. You can amplify our Twitter thread and use our call to action to urge Congress to stop funding ICE's abusive shackling program.

In separate news, last week we announced a victorious end to our lawsuit against ICE in a settlement that guarantees continued use of the National Immigration Detention Hotline.  You may recall that we sued ICE after the agency shut down the Hotline in retaliation for its being featured on the Netflix series 'Orange is the New Black.’  This settlement affirms our organization’s first amendment right to speak out against the immigration detention system while also maintaining a secure and protected way to communicate with people who are inside. You can read more about the settlement via NBCNews.

Thank you for your continued support and for being in this fight with us.

In solidarity,

Layla
