Today my legal team is in court against my predecessor, former Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna, defending Washington's capital gains tax. This revenue will fund education and childcare. The legislature passed this law to address Washington's upside-down tax code which, before this law, was the most regressive in the country.
Less than 0.1% of Washingtonians will owe this tax. Rob McKenna and others filed this lawsuit to squash the tax even though his clients cannot possibly know whether they will have to pay it. They chose a court where they think they can win -- Douglas County Superior Court. There’s a lot at stake — if they prevail, we will have fewer resources for childcare and Washington's schools.
Defending the law is my job. I plan to win.
This case demonstrates a clear contrast. Some Republican attorneys general around the country refuse to defend laws they just do not like.
This is unacceptable. The role of Attorney General is to defend and uphold the law. Will you support me to ensure Washingtonians have an Attorney General they can count on to protect the rule of law?
